ECOWAS opposes Niger’s transition plan, reaffirms military action

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has opposed three-year power transition the Niger Republic’s military junta had proposed.

Abdourahmane Tiani, the Niger Republic’s self-declared head of state, revealed the plan in a late-night address on Saturday. But in his reaction, Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs, peace and security, said that “Ecowas is not accepting any prolonged transition again in the region.”

Musah advised the junta “to get ready to hand over in the shortest possible time.”

He said, “The earlier they give power back to civilians and concentrate on their primary responsibility that is defending the territorial integrity of Niger, the better for them.” He added the “military aspect is very much on.”
