Police explain attack on EndSARS memorial marchers

The Lagos state police command says its operatives only shot teargas canisters at ‘lawless’ protesters. Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the command, said this in his reaction to alleged police attack on EndSARS memorial marchers in Lekki on Thursday.

“Peaceful persons were allowed to move around without interference from the police. Some of them that decided to be lawless and start mounting the toll complex, an action threatening the existing law and order in the area, were dispersed with teargas,” he said. Hundeyin equally said claim of police shooting at the protesters was untrue, asking his challenges on twitter to produce pictorial evidence.

A tweep, Gbenga Sesan opposed Hundeyin, posting a picture while insisting the protesters conducted themselves peacefully. “Mr. Ben Hundeyin …your men did not only fire canisters and aim water cannons at unarmed protesters, they also beat up a journalist,” said Sesan on his twitter handle.

Nigeria, on October 2020, saw huge protests against police brutality across many cities in the country. The shooting of some protesters at Admiralty Toll Plaza, Lekki, attracted a national outcry. The demonstrations also turned bloody in other parts of the country.
