BREAKING: Atiku picks Okowa as running mate over Wike

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has picked Delta State Governor Ifeanyin Okowa over Rivers state Governor Nyesom Wike.

“I am delighted to announce Governor Ifeanyi A. Okowaas my Vice Presidential candidate. I look forward to travelling our great country together, engaging with all Nigerians and building a shared future of peace, unity, and prosperity for all. As One We Can Get It Done.,” Atiku said on Thursday.

It has been speculated Wike is the preferred choice of a select committee, set up by the party to find a running mate to Atiku. The Rivers state government was also touted as the choice of the PDP National Working Committee. Okowa’s emergence as the vice presidential candidate of the party has put paid to the speculation.

Moreover, it is double whammy for Wike, who lost the presidential ticket to Atiku at a keenly contested primary election many believed he would have won. The last-minute withdrawal of Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal from the presidential race apparently led to Wike’s defeat in the primaries in which he was regarded the biggest spender.
