Body pounces on ECOWAS over planned military action

An organisation, the Egalitarian Mission for Africa, has sued ECOWAS for planning to invade Niger.

In the suit filed by its lawyer, Kayode Ajulo, EMA states that intervening militarily military violates Articles 1, 5, 15, 16, 17, 21, 22 and 24 of the African charter on human and peoples’ rights and others.

It adds that Article 22(2) of the protocol on the community court of justice mandates that when a dispute is brought before the court, member states should refrain from any action likely to militate against its settlement.

No date has been fixed for hearing in the suit.

Nigerien military palace guards, led by Gen. Abdourhamane Tchiani, overthrew President Mohammed Bazoum and immediately detained him.

The intransigent military leaders have rebuffed entreaties from world bodies including the African Union and the United Nations for negotiation.

The coup leaders did not also accept similar request offered by the United States.
