Bill against doctors’ migration anti-labour – FG

The Federal Government has opposed and described as anti-labour a proposed legislation seeking to stop migration of medical doctors from the country.

Chris Ngige, Nigeria’s minister of labour and productivity stated the government’s rejection of the bill on Monday.

Ngige equally urged doctors to shelve any planned protest over salary raise. He said the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to which the other medical bodies are affiliated is already in talks with the government.

Ngige said, “NMA is discussing with the Federal Ministry of Health, salaries income and wages commission and the Ministry of Labour, and we know that NMA has accepted a salary increase of between 25 and 30 per cent across the board for their members.

“So, I don’t know the logic by which people who are members of NMA are now coming up to say pay us 200 per cent increase.

“I don’t understand it. I have called the NMA President to contact them on the issue of remuneration negotiation.”

TheCornet reports that the doctors are demanding a raise of 200 per cent, based on the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).

They also want state governments and private hospital owners to implement the Domestication of the Medical Residency Training Act, and equally to review their hazard allowances, among others.
