ARCON sues Facebook for N30bn

The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria has sued Meta, the parent company owning Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) and its agents AT3 Resources Limited for N30billion. This is according to the regulator’s statement.

The aggrieved body wants the court to declare as illegal and a violation of its extant laws the continued publication and exposure of various advertisements directed at the Nigerian market through Facebook and Instagram platforms, without recourse to it for vetting and approval.

ARCON says, while it is not regulating the online media space, its focus is on advertising and marketing communications on the online platforms in line with its establishment Act.

“ARCON reiterates that it would not permit unethical and irresponsible advertising on the Nigeria’s advertising space,” the statement said.

ARCON has in recent times rolled out some guidelines, including the banning of foreign voice-over artists on advertisement that targets the Nigerian market.
