Akpabio wins controversial senatorial ticket

Godswill Akpabio, former minister of Niger Delta Affairs, has won the rerun for the All Progressives Congress (APC) Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial district ticket.

Akpabio had made an unsuccessful presidential run, which saw him step down for the presidential candidate of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

For the rerun, the party’s electoral officials declared Akpabio winner of the rerun that was shunned by three other aspirants. The only aspirant who partook in the primary election, Obong Emem Ekperikpe Ekpo, decided he was stepping down for Akpabio.

Stephen Ntukekpo, the Akwa Ibom state chairman of the APC,  said that the party’s national leadership directed him to organise a rerun, based on infractions that marred the previous exercise.

“There was some infractions in the primaries held about a week ago and I was directed by the National Working Committee to carry out a re-run,” he stated.
