Zamfara Gov Dauda Lawal vows to win rerun

Dauda Lawal, governor of Zamfara State, says that he is sure of winning the rerun between him and his challenger, Bello Matawalle.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Lawal, of the Peoples Democratic Party, the winner of the state governorship election. Dissatisfied with the declaration, the All Progressives Congress candidate, Matawalle, filed an appeal against the declaration.

In its ruling, the Appeal Court declared the election inconclusive and ordered a rerun in select local government areas.

On Friday, Lawal, in a statement, expressed his optimism of defeating Matawalle in the rerun. He described the ruling as a “temporary setback” but promised to “retain this widely acclaimed mandate.”

“However, I remain optimistic that the collective decision of the people will ultimately prevail.

“We will emerge victorious as our unwavering determination and steadfast commitment leave no room for doubt or fear.

“We faced numerous challenges on the road to victory in the last election. But let me assure our people that we are fully committed to going to great lengths to retain this widely acclaimed mandate,” Lawal said in a statement by his media spokesperson, Sulaiman Idris.

TheCornet reports that Matawalle is currently Nigeria’s minister (for state) of defence.
