Police “arrest” perpetrators of Sagamu mayhem

The Nigeria Police said that they have arrested some of the perpetrators of Monday mayhem in the Sagamu area of Ogun State.

Angry residents hit by the lingering fuel and currency scarcity had burned down and destroyed some banks, Automated Teller Machines, and an office of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) in the ancient town on Monday.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the force police public relations officer, tweeted about the arrests made.

ā€œThe incidence in Sagamu, Ogun State was criminal, senseless, evil, and barbaric. Almost 10 banks were destroyed, IEDC station burnt, many places torched ā€¦ Anyway, many have been arrested and they will be charged to court,ā€ he said.

Equally, while reacting on the issue, the stateā€™s Commissioner of Police, Frank Mba, said that law enforcement agents had gathered ā€œintelligenceā€ on ā€œsome criminal elements planning to take advantage of the challenging economic situation to disrupt the peace.ā€

He warned that the police would ā€œarrest and bring to bookā€ troublemakers.

In the same vein, the townā€™s traditional ruler, the Akarigbo of Remo Oba Babatunde Ajayi, sued for peace. He said, ā€œI appeal to all to remain calm and peaceful as we continue to engage the Federal Government. This policy is not from the State or local government. Therefore, the destruction of lives and properties will only compound an already bad situation.ā€

TheCornet reports that Nigerians continue to face scarcity of naira and petrol, leading to protests in different parts of the country. The currency redesign policy of the federal government and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have led to cash squeeze nationwide, making it difficult for citizens to make cash withdrawals.
