Nigerians eager as tribunal rules on presidential election dispute Wednesday

Nigerians are eager to hear the ruling on the outcome of the last February 25 presidential election, slated for Wednesday, April 6.

Opposition candidates, namely Peter Obi and Abubakar Atiku, both of the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party respectively, had challenged the victory of the ruling party’s standard-bearer, Bola Tinubu.

The electoral umpire declared Tinubu the winner, but the opposition candidates kicked, citing among other issues his (Tinubu) failure to win two-third of votes in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

They also cited in their court filings that Tinubu was ineligible to contest the poll. The opposition argued that the confiscation of large sums of money belonging to Tinubu by US authorities on the suspicion it was drug crime proceeds had disqualified him and urged the tribunal to annul his electoral outcome.

In addition, the opposition picked holes in Tinubu’s academic qualifications obtained from the Chicago State University (CSU). One of the challengers, Atiku went further to file a suit in a US court to compel the CSU to release Tinubu’s academic records to him, but the court is yet to give a ruling on it.

Security agencies have cordoned off the court’s location and, similarly, other areas in the FCT.
