US Supreme Court decides whether Trump can run

The US Supreme Court will decide on Thursday whether former president and front line Republican Party candidate Donald Trump can run for office again.

Colorado had struck Trump off its ballot, accusing him of taking part in insurrection against the United States.

Some other states are gearing to follow suit, but the Apex Court will today decide whether such a decision can stay.

The Court is expected to deliver the ruling before 5 March, when voters in 15 states – including Colorado – cast their ballots in Republican primaries.

Trump’s name so far remains on the Colorado ballot, pending the court’s ruling.

In its report, the BBC traced the trajectory of the law banning anyone who has “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” from holding federal office” to a Civil War-era constitutional amendment.

TheCornet reports that Trump had disputed the 2020 general election, won by incumbent President Joe Biden.

He was also seen to have encouraged protesters who breached security cordon to invade the White House.

Donald Trump holds firmly to the belief that he actually won the election.
