Group seeks Sanusi’s reinstatement as Kano emir

A group, “Yan Dangwalen Jihar Kano” (the Kano Electorate), is seeking reinstatement of deposed emir of Kano, Muhammed Sanusi II. The group is also asking the Kano State Assembly to review the law setting up four additional emirates namely Gaya, Rano, Karaye and Bichi.

The group said, “It is our firm belief that consolidating the emirates into a single entity will lead to greater unity and progress for the people of Kano. This consolidation may serve to streamline governance and promote a more cohesive community for the betterment of all citizens.

It added, “We humbly request your esteemed assembly to revisit and reconsider the decision to remove HRH Sanusi Lamido Sanusi from his throne. Our belief is based on the belief that his reinstatement will foster unity, peace, and stability within Kano State and its neighboring communities.”

Former governor Abdulahi Ganduje, now chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, had set up the additional emirates. It was also he who deposed Sanusi from the throne. Rabiu Kwankwaso, who Ganduje succeeded and under whom he was deputy governor, installed Sanusi the emir. Both politicians would later fall out and had become bitter enemies.

Knowing so at the time, Sanusi became a bitter critic of the erstwhile Ganduje-led administration. The strained relationship between Ganduje and Sanusi is believed to underlie the decision to remove him as emir.

Following his New Nigeria Peoples Party governorship victory over Ganduje’s APC, Kwankwaso stated that the administration of Governor Abba Yusuf would review the constitution of the additional emirates.
