Myanmar hands deposed leader Suu Kyi four years jail
A court has sentenced Myanmar’s deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi to four years imprisonment. The court found Kyi guilty of incitement and breaching Coronavirus restrictions, according to Reuters.
The court also sentenced President Win Myint to four years in prison.
The Myanmar military detained Suu Kyi and other civilian leaders, since Feb. 1 following a coup.
Their detention has seen widespread protests and raised international concern. The secret reportedly took place in the country’s capital, Naypyitaw.
Kyi, 76, is a Nobel peace prize winner. Her sentencing is the first of the dozen of cases stacked against her by the junta.
Western countries have urged Myanmar to release Suu Kyi and condemned the violence occasioned by the coup. About 1,300 people are said to have been killed.
