Irukera responds to sacking from FCCPC

Babatunde Irukera, former chief executive officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Council (FCCPC), has reacted to the announcement of his sacking from the agency.

He wrote on his official X account: “Grateful for the opportunity to have served the incredibly vibrant and loyal Nigerian citizens/consumers.

“They deserve a better deal. I leave behind a strong institutional advocate in the FCCPC and an outstanding team of soldiers who work there daily for the cause of fair markets.

Irukera was director-general of the Consumer Protection Council, a precursor to the FCCPC. An ally of former vice president Yemi Osinbajo, Irukera worked as a partner in the latter’s law firm, SIMMONSCOOPER Partners for over ten years.

He had also served as managing partner in the Chicago, United States law firm, Partners, among others. Born in Kaduna, Irukera -the law graduate from the Obafemi Awolowo University-is an ordained pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

Irukera is known to have led the FCCPC with vigour, taking key actions aimed at sanitizing the consumer space and protecting consumers.

On his watch, the FCCPC led sustained campaign against unregistered fintechs operating illegally in the Nigerian credit market and employing blackmail and threats to recover loans from borrowers.
