Nigerian soldiers on battlefield ‘lament’ poor feeding

Counterinsurgency soldiers have lamented poor feeding, according to a report of their plights.

SaharaReporters is reporting that a soldier squealed the battalion in Ngamdu commandeered by Lt. Col. A. A. Buba gave them only bread and tea for breakfast on Mondays and Thursdays, rice for dinners, white rice and stew for Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays “but concussion rice for the remaining week days.”

The soldiers shared several photographs showing the abysmal food. They also claimed the army authorities have failed to pay their allowances.

“The cheating was so much, too much. If I am not in the Northeast, I would have resigned because the cheating is much. Let’s say the money they gave them for feeding allowance is not that much,” the report quoted a soldier as saying.

The report is not the first to reveal the pitiable fates of soldiers fighting terrorism and banditry in Nigeria’s beleaguered north-east region.

TheCable, in the 2018 investigative report, revealed soldiers on battlefield took to playing sports betting and relied on likely winning, because the authorities failed to pay their allowances.

The report similarly claimed the soldiers were poorly kitted while some wear flipflops to the warfronts. Some of the respondents told the online newspaper that they lived in abandoned classrooms and are poorly fed.
