Save me, inmates after my life – Abba Kyari begs judge

Abba Kyari, an under trial police officer facing drug trial, has appealed to a Federal High Court to grant him bail.

A report claimed inmates at Kuje correctional facility had attempted Kyari’s life and that he had to buy his safety.

During his resumed trial on Thursday, Kyari through his counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), informed the court he and his co-defendants were applying for a fresh bail. The counsel also said the application was served on the National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

He said the application became necessary due to the nature of the work the defendants had done in the course of policing the country.

Ikpeazu said the defendants were being remanded in the custodial centre with criminals whose arrest they facilitated.

The lawyer said their lives were at risk, hence the need for their bail.

Kyari’s co-defendants are ACP Ubia, ASP Bawa James, Insp Simon Agirigba and Insp. John Nuhu.

While Kyari, Ubia, Agirigba and Nuhu are seeking bail over the alleged threat to their lives, ASP Bawa James is not.

Counsel to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Sunday Joseph, opposed the bail request. He reminded the court that matter before it on the resumed hearing was the reviewing of the facts of two of the defendants who had pleaded guilty.

The two are Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne, the main drug traffickers from whom Kyari and his men seized some cocaine at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.

DailyTrustis reporting that the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), FCT Command, Humphrey Chukwuedo, denied there was threat to the defendants’ lives.

“There is nothing about Abba Kyari; he is not under any threat. I was with him yesterday, I was with him today before our staff started going to court.

“There is nothing about any threat. He’s not being threatened at all,” adding it is Kyari’s “right to ask for bail
