SSANU, NASU suspend strike

The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Education Institutions (NASU) Saturday suspended their strike. The resolution will take effect next Wednesday.

The truce between the government and the unions followed a meeting with the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, in Abuja.

Adamu said the government has resolved to splurge N50 billion on paying the unions’ members earned allowances and also to meet the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

For its part, the ASUU has dared the government on its resolve not to pay the lecturers for the period of its strike. The minister says the government would implement the ‘no work, no pay’ policy against the lecturers.

In its response, ASUU threatened its members would not teach students the backlog of studies should the government implement the policy.
