Oil marketers oppose Tinubu on subsidy removal

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has vented its opposition to the fuel subsidy removal. President Bola Tinubu had informed Nigerians while delivering his inaugural speech that his predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari, had removed the subsidy on petrol.

Reacting to the development, Ukadike Chinedu, IPMAN’s spokesperson, said that the government should have dialogued with the marketers before removing the subsidy.

He said, “We are not in support of the removal of fuel subsidy at this time.” Chinedu said that the government should instead fix the refineries. He worries that removing subsidy would worsen the economic conditions of Nigerians.

“The government of President Tinubu should not adopt what is in the transition document handed over to it by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Someone (Buhari) who for eight years did not remove subsidy is advising a new government to remove it.

“That is not fair and should not be adopted.”

He also urged the new government to dialogue with IPMAN on the way to address the issue.
