PoS operators defy CBN, see new transaction charges

Point of Sales (PoS) operators have reeled out new charges to be levied on customers, but they are doing so in disregard to Central Bank of Nigeria’s directives.

Stephen Adeoye, public relations officer of the Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria (Lagos chapter), recently, said that withdrawing between N1000 and N2,400 will attract a N100 levy; between N3500 to N4000, N200 levy; between N4,100 and N6,400 will attract N300 charge.

He added that N400 would be charge for transaction ranging between N6,500 and to N7,900; N500 for withdrawal ranging between N8500 and N10,900; while withdrawing between N11,000 to N14,000 will attract a fee of N600; N14,500 and N17,900, N700; N18,000 to N2000, N800 respectively.

According to Elegbede, the charges will be implemented nationally. He alluded to “the current economic realities” as the reason for the increased charges.

The CBN says it is aware of the increased charges, despite its warning against it. Isa AbdulMumin, CBN’s director of corporate communications, said that the apex bank is “working towards resolving the issue.”
