Poly lecturers strike over unpaid salaries

Lecturers at the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, in Ondo State have begun a strike after being owed 13 months’ salary.

Stating their grievances in a communique, the lecturers, under the auspices of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, vowed not to conduct semester examinations on the students, except they are paid the arrears.

Comrade Arikawe Ade, the union’s chapter chairman, and his secretary, Comrade Fapetu Damilola, explained in the communique that the lecturers agreed took the decision at their congress, held on Friday.

He said, “We want the payment in full of all outstanding (13 months) salary arrears owed to the staff of the institution. The Congress wishes to strongly emphasise that the decision above is binding on all the financial members of the union.”

He added that the soaring petrol price had brought hardship on the union’s members. He appealed to the state and local government workers to ensure the payment of the unpaid salaries.
