Ondo assembly stops deputy governor’s planned impeachment

The Ondo state house of assembly has halted its impeachment move against deputy governor Lucky Aiyetidiwa. The house took the decision after the chief justice of the state, Olusegun Odusola, declined to constitute a panel to probe the allegations leveled against Aiyeditiwa.

Odusola cited the federal high court order restraining him from taking such action.

Olatunji Oshati, spokesperson for the house of assembly, said the lawmakers wait till the federal high court vacates its restraining order.

“This is to show that it is not about witch-hunting, it is about carrying out our oversight functions,” he said.

Oshati added, “We have considered the letter which is everywhere in the public domain and we are halting the impeachment process until the order of the Federal High Court is vacated.

“It is not about being arrogant with power; it is about holding public officers accountable.

“It also shows that the process of impeachment transcends the monopoly of the legislature as we can see that the judiciary has stalled it.”

Aiyeditiwa was in charge of the government while his boss, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, recuperated in an overseas hospital. Aiyeditiwa’s ordeal began after Akeredolu returned to the country.

The populace has not seen the governor in the public sphere since his return as he convalesces at his private residence in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state.
