NRC to screen Nigerians for NIN before boarding train

The Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, has introduced screening Nigerians for their National Identification Number, NIN, before admitting them on trains.

Fidet Okhiria, the NRC’s managing director, said the rule would be applied from May 2022.

“The process of linking passengers to their NIN for improved profiling is ongoing. This layer of passenger screening will commence by May,”, he said.

He also said “the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service will resume as soon as possible with additional security measures put in place,’’ Okhiria stated.

The NRC suspended the Abuja-Kaduna route following a March 28 terrorist attack on a Kaduna-Abuja train.

The terrorists, who the federal government said was a combination of Boko Haram elements and armed bandits, bombed the train attack, killed some passengers and took several others as captives.

Okhiria said rescue efforts are ongoing. He reiterated that 362 passengers and 20 crew members were aboard the ill-fated train when the terrorists struck.
