Nigeria probes state of diplomatic missions

The Federal Government of Nigeria has set up a committee to probe the state of affairs of its diplomatic missions across the world. Boss Mustapha, the secretary to the government of the federation, Tuesday constituted the Presidential Committee on the Review of Number and Strategy for Resourcing Nigeria’s Diplomatic Missions Worldwide.

The special committee will identify the challenges and sustainability of the various missions and make recommendations to the government. Equally, the committee would identify, categorize, and rate the performances of missions based on their revenue generation capacity. It would also look at how to reduce bottlenecks, misapplication, and infractions.

“As we are all aware, our Diplomatic Missions around the world are currently faced with multifaceted challenges following, among others, the scale of perennial indebtedness they find themselves.

“This poses attendant damage to our nation’s integrity.  Consequent upon these, Mr. President approved the constitution of this Presidential Committee,” Mustapha said, according to a statement issued by his office.

The government says it looks to take “cost-saving measures” in running the missions. The committee has a 3-month lifespan.

Ambassador Martin Uhomoibi (retired Federal Permanent Secretary), is the chairman of the presidential committee.
