NCS urged to look for 422 fleeing prisoners

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NSC) is unable to account for 422 escaping prisoners after last July, 2022 jailbreak at Kuje Medium Custodial Facility.

Hon. Emmanuel Ukpong–Udo said this in his motion presented at the House of Representatives on Wednesday.

The lawmaker noted that 879 inmates, including 64 Boko Haram terrorists, escaped from the prison during the jailbreak.

While some of the inmates were rearrested, 422 others are still at large.

Ukpong-Udo expressed his concern for the safety of citizens living with the fleeing inmates.

He believes that the “escapees are thriving in different communities, blending in and potentially continuing their criminal activities unnoticed.”

The lawmaker advocated necessary measures “to track and apprehend these individuals.”

The lower parliament finally adopted the motion and mandated its committees on Reformatory Institutions; Interior; and Police Affairs to synergize with relevant security agencies on how to track the whereabouts of the escaped inmates.

The committees have six weeks to carry out their assignments and report their outcomes for legislative action.

TheCornet reports that the Islamic State launched the prison attack, which it called “Breaking the Walls Campaign.”

The terrorists overpowered the scores of military, police, and prison guards at the prison. They deployed explosives during the attack, causing substantial damages to the prison facility.
