Jealous married kills cousin over secret loverÂ
A married man, Godwin Kotey, is reported to have stabbed his cousin Fredrick Sackey to death, after accusing him of having a secret affair with his girlfriend.
Kotey had hidden the said girlfriend Victoria Sabbath in Sackey’s house, since he could not take her to his own house where he lives with his wife.
Fredrick accepts and houses Victoria for some time before a disagreement started between him and Kotey.
Kotey accused Fredrick of having a clandestine affair with Victoria. The matter got to a head and Fredrick ejected Victoria from his house.
But Victoria would return to beg Fredrick to allow her to continue to inhabit his house, claiming she couldn’t get a place of her own.
Fredrick took her back in, a decision that angered his cousin Kotey.
In his rage, Kotey went in search of Fredrick at a popular market. In the heat of their altercation, Kotey stabbed Fredrick with a screwdriver in his chest. Fredrick succumbed to his injury and passed on.
Kotey was arrested for murder and had been in prison custody since the June 2020 incident.
He was held for murder. But with the help of his lawyer the charge changed to manslaughter.
The incident, which happened in Ghana, came before an Accra High Court.
The court considered the plea bargaining agreement between Kotey’s lawyer and the Department of Public Prosecution office.
On the strength of it, the trial judge, Lydia Marco, sentenced Kotey.
The judge said, “I have considered the circumstances of this case and I also believe that the proposal of a sentence of five years is reasonable.”
She added that Kotey must do his time with “hard labour.”
