The Nigerian Government has endorsed China’s launching of the Global Governance Initiative, GCI, describing it as “timely and thoughtful contribution to ongoing efforts aimed at strengthening the international system.”
In a statement issued on Thursday, Nigerian foreign affairs ministry said the GCI was a spinoff from previous engagements including the recently held Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
The statement highlights the GCI will address the “pressing challenges in global governance, including the need for broader representation, enhanced respect for international law, and more effective responses to climate change, digital inequality, and emerging technologies.”
Nigeria says it welcomes the initiative, given its status as “one of Africa’s largest economies and an active participant in multilateral diplomacy”.
The Nigerian Government also says that it “views the GCI as a valuable platform for advancing shared priorities, including reforms of the United Nations, inclusive governance in emerging domains such as artificial intelligence, cyberspace and outer space etc.”
The statement adds that the GCI aligns with “Nigeria’s national development objectives, principles of strategic autonomy, as well as the African Union agenda 2026.”
Nigeria pinpoints that its support for the GCI “reaffirms its enduring commitment to a more just, inclusive, and effective international order …that reflects the aspiration of all peoples and uphold the principle of shared responsibility and mutual respect.”
