Why Tinubu’s ambassadors might be rejected overseas – Abdullahi
Bolaji Abdullahi, spokesperson for the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), has expressed the concern that some of the would-be ambassadors might be rejected in some countries.
President Bola Tinubu had forwarded names of ambassador-nominees to the Senate for screening, an exercise held on Thursday.
However, Abdullahi faulted the process, saying the Senate was not firm with the nominees.
“We are not surprised, but we are disappointed that a process as serious as screening those who will represent Nigeria abroad has been reduced to something so trivial,” Abdullahi told the Vanguard. He feared that nominees might not be successful were the scrutiny a stricter one.
“If posted to serious countries, many of these people would be rejected,” he said.
Abdullahi reportedly said that the poor handling of the exercise reinforces the “public perception that legislative oversight in Nigeria has become inconsistent, rigorous for some candidates but largely ceremonial for certain politically exposed and controversial individuals.”
The ADC spokesperson also urged the Senate to return to a merit-based screening process.
