Hunger-stricken Nigerians protest in Osun

Another protest centered on the economic hardship in the country took place in Osun State, days after similar ones erupted in Niger and Kano State.

The leader of the Osun protest and Chairman of Civil Society Coalition in the state, Comrade Waheed Lawal urged President Bola Tinubu to urgently tackle the hardship facing the citizens.

The protesters had converged on the Freedom Park, Osogbo, for their “peaceful solidarity walk”.

The protest leader, while addressing the gathering, said, “Government must ameliorate the suffering of the people.

“They must do whatever they need to do to make sure that the people live in better conditions.

“Nigerians deserve the best. They promised us renewed hope but what they are giving us now is renewed hardship.

“We reject renewed hardship in our lives, and in our economy because Nigerians deserve the best.”

Policemen and some personnel of other security agencies monitored the protest in the state capital.

Immediately after he returned to Nigeria from his 13-day visit to Paris, France, President Tinubu ordered the release of 42,000 metric tonnes of grains from the national food reserve.

The federal government also said it had agreed with rice growers to make available 60,000 metric tonnes of the food.

It warned food hoarders aiming higher profits by creating artificial scarcity to desist from doing so or would face the government wrath.

At the same time, organised labour has given the government 14 days to either act on the agreement they reached on ameliorating the sufferings of Nigerians or face a strike.
