Presidential election petitions court shuns technicalities, vows to do justice

The presidential election petitions court (PEPC) on Monday started with the pre-hearing of the five petitions filed before it. A five-man panel of justices, led by Haruna Tsammani, the chief registrar of the court of appeal, is to hear the petitions.

The other members are Justice Stephen Adah of the Court of Appeal, Asaba division; Justice Misitura Bolaji-Yusuf of the Court of Appeal, Asaba; Justice Boloukuoromo Ugoh of Kano division; and Justice Abba Mohammed of the Court of Appeal, Ibadan.

At the Monday’s sitting, Justice Tsammani said that the justices are “determined to look at the matter dispassionately and give justice to whoever deserves justice.”

He equally assured they would determine the petitions on their merits and not on “technicalities” such that the petitioners “will be satisfied that justice has been done.”

Justice Tsammani also warned the parties to avoid filing unnecessary applications that could delay proceedings.
