Gunmen abduct passengers along Enugu-Port Harcourt Highway

Some gunmen abducted scores of passengers along Enugu-Port Harcourt highway, a report has said.

The incident happened on Saturday, but many are unaware of it.

The armed men, suspected to be herdsmen, reportedly blocked the highway at the point between Leru Junction and Ihube Community, a boundary town between Imo and Abia states, Nigeria’s South-east.

The assailants, allegedly about 30 of them, attacked three buses and kidnapped all the passengers travelling on them. They were also said to have razed a military van and wounded two soldiers, who confronted them. Due to the roadblock the assailants mounted, several vehicles behind took their presence for that of policemen.

It was not until they began shooting that the other travellers on the road realised they were bandits. Many of the fear-stricken road users reportedly scurried into the bush to avoid in fear for their lives.

Chikamnayo Eze, the commissioner for information in Abia State,  reportedly confirmed the attack.
