Governor Makinde’s deputy, Rauf Olaniyan impeached

Rauf Olaniyan, the embattled deputy governor of Oyo state, has been removed from office. Olaniyan has had a running battle with Governor Seyi Makinde.

To prevent his removal, he filed a suit at the state high court. In its ruling on the matter, Justice Ladiran Akintola dismissed Olaniyan’s suit on the basis that the court had no jurisdiction to adjudicate on legislative business of the house of assembly. Dissatisfied, Olaniyan filed an appeal against the judgment.

Despite his doing so, the state’s chief judge Munta Abimbola went ahead to set up an investigative panel. 23 members of the assembly had accused Olaniyan of misconduct, financial recklessness, insubordination among other offences levelled against him. Be it as it may, Olaniyan’s removal cannot be separated from his disagreement with his boss, Governor Makinde. The disagreement between the two culminated in Olaniyan’s decampment from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
