Emefiele dares arrest, resumes duty

The embattled Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele is said to have returned to Nigeria amid the move by the Department of State Security to arrest him.

In a statement, Osita Nwanisobi, director, corporate communications, CBN, said that Emefiele resumed his duty on Monday.

He returned purportedly to attend the bank’s monetary policy committee’s meeting fixed for next week.

The DSS says it is seeking Emefiele’s arrest for terrorism financing. But, its effort to get a court order for the arrest has so far failed.

Following a backlash, the DSS asked Nigerians to see reasons with it and not to be used to undermine its work.

Speaking on the matter, senior lawyer and public commentator Femi Falana bewailed President Muhammadu Buhari’s silence on the stand-off between the secret police and Emefiele.

Falana spoke on a Channels television programme, monitored by TheCornet.

According to him, the charge levelled against the CBN chief presents Nigerians a feeling of deja vu.

He recounted how, in 2014, the DSS made the similar allegation against Emefiele’s predecessor, Sanusi Lamidi Sanusi.

But, Sanusi won in his suit filed against the DSS in the court and was consequently awarded N50million compensation, said Falana .

The human rights crusader equally opined the allegation was a weighty one and that the DSS should go ahead to arrest Emefiele to truly prove its allegation against him.
