Delta, Edo police conflict on kidnapping of 6 footballers

The police under the Delta, and Edo commands have returned conflicting responses on the kidnapping of six female footballers.

The footballers were reportedly returning from Owa-Alero, in Ika North-East Local Government Area of Delta State , after a football match.

A report says some gunmen intercepted and abducted the soccer players in Uronigbe, a border community between Edo and Delta states in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State.

Some of abducted persons’ names are given as Mrs. Precious Agbajor, Abraham, Nancy, Beatrice, their driver and another unnamed victim.

Returning a comment on the issue, PUNCH quoted Edo police command spokesperson DSP Bright Edafe as confirming the incident, but stating it happened in Edo State.

On his part, Chidi Nwabuzor, the spokesperson for Edo command, said he was unaware of the kidnapping alleged to have taken place within his jurisdiction.

“You know we transmit our records to Force Headquarters everyday. There is no such record before us. From the Command’s record, no such incident happened yesterday (Friday), so the police will not give account of anything unreported.”

The conflicting reports signal ineffective communication across police formations. Nigeria police are underfunded and ill equipped, thereby affecting police effectiveness and their ability to deploy cutting-edge technology required in modern policing.
