CBN chief confirms Emefiele obtained $6.2m from CBN vault

Onyeka Ogbu, a deputy director in charge of branch operations at the Central Bank of Nigeria, has confirmed that the embattled Godwin Emefiele indeed took $6.2million from the bank’s vault.

Ogbu stated this in his testimony before a Federal Capital Territory High Court hearing the allegation of impersonation and abuse against the former governor of the Apex bank.

The prosecuting Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had alleged that Emefiele mimicked the secretary to the federal government to request for the money, claiming it was for international election observers.

“On January 8, 2023, a request for payment of $6, 230, 000 was brought to my attention by the Banking Services department,” Ogbu, who is a witness in the trial, said.

He added: “Ours is to make payment, we don’t have the power to approve.

“Having gone through the documents and satisfied, I minuted on it and sent for processing and disbursement which was complied with.”

During the proceeding, prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) urged the court to stand down the matter to enable him probe missing evidentiary documents.
