Catholic Church takes stock of destruction suffered in Sokoto protest

The Catholic Diocese of Sokoto has revealed the wanton destruction of its churches by hoodlums and Muslim religious fanatics during Saturday’s protest in the state.

Protesters, especially youths, staged a violent protest to demand the release of suspects arrested by the police, in connection to the honorific killing of Deborah Samuel for blasphemy.

In a release signed by Reverend Fr. Christopher Omotosho, director, directorate of social communications, Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, the church revealed the damages to its properties.

“During the protest, groups of youths led by some adults in the background attacked the Holy Father Catholic Cathedral at Bello Way, destroying the glass window, those of Bishop Lawton secretariat and destroyed a community bus parked within the premises”, the statement said.

It further said the protesters also burnt a part of the St. Kelvin’s Catholic Church, Gidan Dere, Eastern By-pass. It said the “windows of a hospital under construction was partly damaged too”.

The protesters also burnt down a bus parked on the premuises of the Bakhita Centre, located along Aliyu Jodu Road.

The cold-blooded killing of Deborah Samuel, a Christian student of the Shehu Sagari College of Education, had outraged many Nigerians.

He killers claimed she blasphemed Prophet Muhammed through a comment she dropped on a WhatsApp class group.
