Call for Ayu’s exit fractures southwest PDP

The Southwest chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party are disunited on the call for the removal of the national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu.

The Ogun, Osun, and Ondo chapters of the party have pointedly rejected the fresh demand by Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde on Ayu to step down.

Makinde, on Wednesday, said, “We must resolve the issue on the face of Nigerians, by asking the National Chairman to step down, so that the PDP in the Southern part of the party will feel included in the top hierarchy of the party.”

But, the chapters’ chairmen of the party have expressed their disapproval of the statement.

Dr Akindele Adekunle, Osun PDP caretaker chairman, reportedly said that they would not be “part of any revolt against the national leadership of the PDP.”

Similarly, the Ogun chapter of the party, said it “strongly insists that the sanctity of the party constitution cannot be slaughtered on the altar of narrow individual whims and caprice”.

“The party …requires full concentration to remain focused on its goal of rescuing and repositioning the country for prosperity and abundance. Therefore, all forms of distractions should be jettisoned for the common of all,” the chapter said, in apparent reference to Makinde’s call. The same for the party’s Ondo chapter, which said it was focused on winning the forthcoming elections.

TheCornet reports that Ayu continues to insist on keeping his position. His critics, among who are governors and some party stakeholders, stated that Ayu had promised to quit, should the party’s presidential candidate emerge from the north.

The emergence of a northerner, Atiku Abubakar, therefore spurred the call on Ayu to relinquish his position to a southern candidate and for purpose of fairness.
