Buhari seeks senate approval of Olukayode Ariwoola as CJN

President Muhammadu Buhari has asked the senate to confirm Olukayode Ariwoola as the substantive chief justice of Nigeria (CJN).

Buhari said his action is “pursuant to section 231 (1) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.”

Senator Ahmad Lawan, the president of the senate, revealed this while reading the president’s letter during plenary Tuesday.

The president nominated Ariwoola acting CJN following the shocking resignation of the Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad. The former CJN, Muhammed cited ill-health for his action but there were insinuations he forced out of the position.

Muhammed lost the trust of other Supreme Court justices, who in a petition accused him of incompetence and insensitivity to issues bordering on their welfare.
