Atiku gains as Shekarau dumps senatorial ticket, rejoins PDP

Presidential candidate Abubakar Atiku made a political gain Monday when he received Ibrahim Shekarau into his fold. Shekarau, a former governor of Kano, formally defected to the PDP at a ceremony in Kano.

He promised that he and his supporters would deliver votes to Atiku.

“Myself and thousands of my followers have defected to the People Democratic Party, and are now bona fide members of the PDP,” he said. Shekarau added he had written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), informing it he had dumped the senatorial ticket of the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP).

He had left the PDP to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Shekarau’s disagreement with incumbent Governor Abdulahi Ganduje led to his exit from the APC. He would subsequently joined Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s fledging NNPP. His romance with the NNPP however ended on a sour note, as he accused Kwankwaso of reneging on their agreements. He said, aside himself, the NNPP failed to give electoral ticket to his some of his aides.

At the event were the governors of Sokoto, and Taraba Aminu Tambuwal and Darius Ishaku respectively. The National Chairman of the PDP, Iyorchia Ayu, and members of the party’s Board of Trustees also attended the ceremony. Former Vice President Namadi Sambo also witnessed the defection and so did former Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Mahdi Aliyu, and former Minister of Transport, Idris Umar; Ahmad Babba-Kaita, Senator for Katsina North District, and former lawmakers, Dino Melaye, and Shehu Sani.
