Healthcare providers go on strike in Oyo

Members of the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals in Oyo State Hospitals Management Board have begun a seven-day warning strike over their unmet demands

Olanrewaju Ajani, the union’s chairman, said that the Oyo State Government had failed to meet an earlier ultimatum by the union to meet their needs.

The demands include teaching allowance for its members involved in training of interns and students on clinical and research postings.

Another is the call for adjustment of CONHESS salary scale to favour its members.

Ajani added, “We also demand the release of promotion letters for qualified members who participated in the last promotion exercises in the state, which others have been enjoying some months ago, and the restoration of call duty allowance for dental therapists.

“We want the recruitment of more health workers and professionals to include members of NUAHP to replace those who are retiring and those who left the service of the state, among other demands,” he said.

He said that the union held several meetings and negotiations with the management of Oyo State Hospitals’ Management Board, Ministry of Health, Office of the Head of Service and other relevant offices.

He said the meetings and interventions did not yield positive results.

Ajani urged the state governor, Seyi Makinde, to urgently address the issue.
