Adebanjo, others angry because I congratulated Tinubu – Afenifere’s spokesperson

Jare Ajayi, the suspended national publicity secretary of Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has said that some senior members of the group were irked by two releases he issued, including one congratulating president-elect Bola Tinubu.

Ayo Adebanjo, a fierce Tinubu critic, is the deputy leader of the ethnic-based group. Afenifere had suspended Ajayi and his colleague, Kole Omololu —the group’s national organising secretary, over a release that condemned Igbo leader Emmanuel Iwuayanwu’s description of Yoruba as “political rascals.”

But Iwuayanwu denied he meant the entire Yoruba race but only referred to those who engaged in violence against Igbos during the last Lagos governorship poll.

Ajayi said that Afenifere’s claim that it decided to suspend them after a disciplinary panel declared them guilty of their alleged offences was untrue.

He explained that some members “expressed their displeasure” Tinubu’s congratulatory message he issued. “Those who called me said that since Mr. Peter Obi and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar were still contesting Asiwaju’s victory, it was wrong to congratulate him,” he said.

Ajayi added that some Afenifere leaders took offence to a statement he released condemning the suffering of Nigerians, occasioned by scarcity of naira.
