UK elects Rishi Sunak as prime minister

Rishi Sunak, an Indian-British, has been elected Britain’s new prime minister.

He succeeds Liz Truss, who resigned due to her ineffectual economic recovery plans.

Sunak got the backing of the majority of Tories required to enable him enter into the contest.

The least mandatory number of conservative members of Parliament each contest must have was 100.

Sunak’s closest challenger, Penny Mordaunt, got the support of 90 of her colleagues.

Since no other person reached the mark, Sunak was announced as only one the only valid application received and, consequently, declared the leader of the Conservative Party.
