Why PDP lost lawsuit against Tinubu, Peter Obi

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost its suit seeking disqualification of All Progressives Congress’ presidential candidate Bola Tinubu, and his Labour Party counterpart, Peter Obi.

The PDP accused Tinubu and Obi of initially nominating placeholders, whom they later replaced with actual running mates. While Tinubu initially picked Kabiru Masari as his running mate to beat the deadline for submission of candidates names, as prescribed in the Electoral Act, Obi chose Doyin Okupe for the same reason.

Tinubu and Obi would later substitute their placeholders with Senator Kashim Shettima and Dr. Ahmed Datti respectively.

In his ruling on Monday, Justice Donatus Okorowo of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja said the suit was incompetent and lacked merit.

The judge held that the PDP did not state the injury it suffered or likely to, based on the actions of the two presidential candidates. He also ruled that the issues regarding nomination of candidates are internal affairs of party, upon which a court lacks jurisdiction to adjudicate.

Justice Okorowo, therefore, dismissed the suit.
