Shootings welcome Shaibu’s emergence

Phillip Shaibu, the deputy governor of Edo State, has emerged as the winner of a parallel Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship primaries.

The election, held at his private residence in the state capital Benin, saw violence caused by armed thugs believed to be at the venue to disrupt the exercise.

Shaibu and delegates escaped with their lives, as he had already been announced  the ticket holder before the violence took place.

The embattled deputy governor is estranged from his principal, state Governor Godwin Obaseki over his political ambition.

Both politicians had ridden on popular support garnered to win their reelection in 2000, particularly against the opposition from their equally estranged political godfather, Adam Oshiomhole.

At the same time, Asue Ighodalo, the preferred candidate of Governor Obaseki has been declared the winner of the government-sponsored primaries, held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
