Godwin Emefiele sent to prison

A federal high court in Abuja, on Friday, ordered remand of former Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, in Kuje Correctional Center.

Emefiele is facing a six-count procurement fraud charges. The Federal Government alleged Emefiele committed the fraud worth over N1 billion while he was governor of the Apex bank.

Emefiele’s counsel, Matthew Burkaa SAN, urged the court to grant him a bail. But, the government’s counsel Rotimi Oyedepo, opposed the application.

In his response to the arguments by the two lawyers, Justice Hamza Muazu said he needed time to study the lawyers’ arguments and the supporting authorities they cited.

Justice Muazu, therefore, adjourned the bail hearing till November 22, while he said trial would begin on November 28.
