Couple, 2 kids, mother-in-law died of inhaling generator fumes

A couple, their two children, the wife’s mother, and an apprentice have died of inhaling generator fumes in Onitsha, Anambra state, the police have said.

A report said that the man and his family had moved into his new house last Wednesday—the same day they died from the poisonous inhalation.

They were celebrating the birth of their new child before a power outage took place. A generating set, placed a short meters from the rooms, was quickly put on and the celebration continued. A family friend, who was visiting the family, met them dead with the door locked and the generating set working. By the time the door was forced open, the family members had died except their four-day-old baby.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra police command, said that the cause of death was yet to be known.

“The matter is still being investigated and the details will be communicated as soon as investigation is concluded,” he said.
