Taxation: How DStv, GOtv rips off Nigeria – Reps

Satellite cable and terrestrial television provider, MultiChoice, is alleged to rip off Nigeria through its failure to pay accurate taxes to the government. The accusation by the House of Representatives states the company owes N1.8 trillion in tax, due to Federal Government by.  Multichoice Group operates DSTV and GoTV in Nigeria.

Rep. Saidu Abdullahi (APC-Niger), during plenary on Wednesday, accused MultiChoice of suppressing information, which was eventually revealed through its submissions of its financial position in its home country, South Africa.

Abdullahi said the Federal Inland Revenue Service had been unable to recover unpaid taxes from the country, despite instituting a litigation against the company.

He said, “The systems audit and investigation revealed enormous indebtedness to the tune of over N1.8 trillion in back total taxes for MultiChoice Nigeria.

“This also includes a $342 million in Value-added tax, for MultiChoice Africa that had never paid any taxes since they started business operations in Nigeria.

As part of its resolution, the lower parliament mandated its Committee on Finance to, within four weeks, investigate tax defaults by MultiChoice.
