Kidnapping: Wike faces Senate

Nyesom Wike, minister for the Federal Capital Territory, has been summoned by the Nigerian Senate over the spate of kidnapping incidents therein.

Equally invited for questioning by the Senate is Commissioner of Police for the FCT  Benneth Igwe. The underlying reason for the invitation is the killing of one Chris Agidy, who is a legislative aide of Senator Ned Nwoko.

Some kidnappers who took the Agidy captive had eventually murdered him. The deceased and 19 others were abducted in Galadimawa axis of Abuja, in November 2023.

After debating the issue, the Senate resolved that Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, should increase police patrols and surveillance in Abuja and other parts of the country.

In addition, the Senate urged installation of CCTV cameras at strategic locations in Abuja and along its highways, and that the police should have a three-digit emergency number.

“The FCT Minister and Police Commissioner would appear before us in closed session on a date to be sent to them by the Clerk of the Senate,” President of Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio stated during plenary.
