Sanwo-Olu fails to repair killer lift five months after doctor’s death

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State, has failed to repair the elevator that trapped and killed Dr Vwaere Diaso, a young house officer attached to the General Hospital, Odan. The incident happened in August, 2023.

Doctors working at the hospital had revealed that the lift malfunctioned intermittently before eventually killing the young doctor.

Since then, the government had abandoned the ill-fated lift in its state of disuse. Also, nothing is heard about the investigation of the installer, whom Governor Sanwo-Olu claimed he handed over to the police for investigation and likely prosecution for negligence.

Following the report of a probe panel, Governor Sanwo-Olu said that he had directed “an audit of all elevators in public offices” among other measures. That, however, cannot be ascertained.

Punch is reporting that it visited the hospital and met the elevator unrepaired.

Gbenga Omotosho, the commissioner for information and strategy, reportedly said the government had awarded a contract for its repairs. Olusegun Ogboye, permanent secretary in Ministry of Health, echoed Omotosho’s statement.

But the newspaper seemed to disbelief the officials, adding in its report that nothing suggested the government indeed awarded the contract.
