Kidnapper attempts suicide to evade police arrest

A suspected kidnapper attempted to take his own life after his plan to abduct his boss failed.

The suspect, identified only as Basiru, had planned with two others to abduct Falilat Oyetunji, an industrialist manufacturing local balm in Osun state.

One of those Basiru recruited for the plot decided to tip off Oyetunji, who subsequently informed the police.

The incident happened in Olorunda village in Iragbiji, Osun.

Yemisi Opalola, the spokesperson for the Osun Police Command, said Basiru was rescued from his suicide attempt and currently recuperating at the Osun state University Hospital.

ā€œIt was on the early hours of Saturday, 6th August, 2022 that an informant, (name withheld) came to inform Mrs Oyetunji, ERO ARIKE, that he saw some people, led by the former staff of her ERO ARIKE company, one Basiru, planning how to kidnap her.

ā€œThen, Oyetunji came to inform the police about it. The Police operatives of the anti kidnapping squad Osogbo were detailed for the assignment and the surveillance was emplaced.

ā€œThe informant was asked to play along with the kidnappers.ā€

Detectives reportedly swooped on the suspects while they were perfecting their plan.

They arrested three suspects including Basiru, while the driver of their vehicle they procured for the operation fled.
