Why Ali Modu Sheriff withdrew from APC chairmanship race

Senator Ali Modu Sheriff has dropped out of the All Progressives Congress chairmanship race.

Sheriff said he was withdrawing because the party had restricted the position only to aspirants from the  north-central part  of the country.

The former Borno State governor was formerly of the defunct All Nigeria Progressives Party, one of the legacy parties that merged to form the ruling APC.

Aside Sheriff, other leaders of the party who have indicated their interest in the position are Senator Adamu Abdullahi, Senator George Akume, Senator Sehu Musa, Senator Tanko Al-Mukura. All but one of the contenders (Musa) is not a former state governor.

On his part, Abdullahi, a former governor of Nasarawa State and, lately, chairman of the APC national reconcilation committee, is touted as President Muhammadu Buhari’s annoited candidate.

The APC, which has swum in the pool of troubles lately, has fixed its convention for March 26.

A court had only on Friday lifted the restraining order initially banning the convention.
